National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS)
The NDSS is a national funding programme supported by the Australian Government for all people with diabetes. Any Australian who holds a Medicare Card is eligible for free registration.
Ask your Diabetes Educator, Nurse Practitioner, Doctor or Primary Care Nurse to help you with your free NDSS registration. We can complete your free registration on-line in minutes.
The NDSS has three main functions:
- Subsidised items used by people living with diabetes
– blood glucose test strips,
– insulin pen needles,
– insulin pump consumables
– continuous glucose monitoring devices
– Ketone testing strips (urine only)
– insulin syringes - Diabetes Fact sheets, information and phone support
A large portion of NDSS funding is set aside for the development and maintenance of evidence- based fact sheets which are free for any person to access on the NDSS website. Funding is allocated to Diabetes Australia for this along with the customer support phone line. - Research into Diabetes Mellitus
Information collected in the NDSS data base is used by the Australian Government to plan for the needs of Australians with diabetes. This includes setting aside the cost to subsidise NDSS items in the Federal Budget.
The information collected by NDSS may be accessed by researchers under strict conditions. Research must be approved by an ethics committee before an application will be considered and all information granted for research purposes is de-identified to protect the privacy of people registered with the NDSS.
