Updates: NDSS access for CGM and Freestyle Libre

Since my last blog NDSS access to Continuous Glucose Monitoring and Freestyle Libre has been activated.  Here is what you need to know.

Access is approved for the following groups of people with type 1 diabetes:

  • adults with a concession card
  • < 21 years of age
  • women who are planning pregnancy, are pregnant and post partum (for specified periods)

NDSS access to CGM and Libre only includes the transmitter and/or sensors for use with a smart phone.  If you require a receiver you will need to obtain this separately.  Ask you diabetes educator for advice.

Approvals: The NDSS requires a diabetes educator or specialist (Endocrinololgist or physician) to complete an access form and submit for approval.   Once your application is approved training can be organised with your diabetes educator to help you understand how to apply the devices, use them safely and interpret the data they provide.

Supply: If you are applying for a CGM your CGM starter kit is sent to your nominated diabetes educator who will organise training.  If you are applying for the Freestyle Libre supplies will be sent to your nominated pharmacy.  You should take your starter kit to your diabetes educator for training.
